Who is Dr. Elston Wong, and what inspired him to become a dentist?
Here’s something people rarely think about: many dentists never considered medical school. Dentistry drew them in for a different reason: the mix of healthcare, precision work, and a touch of artistry.
That’s exactly what pulled Dr. Elston Wong toward the profession.
He didn’t grow up in a dental family, and trips to the dentist never fazed him. If anything, he found them intriguing. Over time, that curiosity grew into a clear sense of purpose: to serve people, solve problems with his hands, and build something meaningful every day.
That blend of science and craftsmanship is still at the heart of his work at our Barrie dental clinic.
Where did Dr. Wong complete his education and training?

Dr. Wong graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry in 1999, Canada’s largest dental school and a place known for its rigorous, detail-focused training.

He went on to complete a General Practice Residency at Tufts University in Boston. That year exposed him to a wide range of clinical situations and taught him something he still values today: “Enthusiasm for dentistry isn’t optional; it’s what fuels a fulfilling career.”
How long has Dr. Wong been practising dentistry in Barrie?

After residency, Dr. Wong worked at the Big Trout Lake Community Nursing Station Dental Clinic and later spent a year in Saint John, New Brunswick. In February 2002, he moved from Ottawa to Barrie, and he has been practising exclusively here ever since.
He often says that “the continuity of caring for patients over many years is one of the most rewarding parts of dentistry. You can monitor subtle changes, plan ahead, and build genuine long-term trust.”
What makes Dr. Wong’s approach to dentistry unique?
His philosophy didn’t come from one place; it evolved across several chapters of his career.

At the University of Toronto, he learned the importance of preparation and respecting every step in the process.
At Tufts, he saw how joy for the craft could shape a meaningful career.
In New Brunswick, working with a largely older population, he learned firsthand that patchwork dentistry never holds up.
And in Barrie, he discovered how powerful a strong, united dental team can be.
These experiences blend into a practice built on modern, evidence-based dentistry delivered in an environment where patients feel real energy, clarity, and care.
What areas of dentistry does Dr. Wong focus on?
Dr. Wong focuses much of his work on complex rehabilitation. These are cases where teeth are worn, broken down, or no longer functioning well. Patients may be struggling with chewing, aesthetics, or chronic issues that keep resurfacing.
Dr. Wong coordinates treatment with hygienists, laboratory technicians, and dental specialists when needed. The goal is simple: restore function, rebuild confidence, and create a plan that actually lasts.
How does Dr. Wong stay up to date with modern dental techniques and technology?
Dentistry evolves quickly. What was possible 25 years ago is very different from what can be achieved today.
Dr. Wong stays current through continuing education, self-study, advanced courses, and ongoing collaboration with colleagues.
But the driving force behind all of this is his genuine love for dentistry. He enjoys solving complex oral puzzles and creating treatment plans that stand the test of time.
From his perspective, dentistry isn’t just about making something look good at first glance. Long-term predictability is where the real success lies.
What is the Kois Center, and why is it important to Dr. Wong’s professional growth?
Around 2010, Dr. Wong felt stuck. He was seeing the same clinical problems repeatedly and didn’t have access to the kind of mentorship he needed. That led him to the Kois Center in Seattle, a highly respected, evidence-based program for restorative dentists.

The curriculum focuses on understanding root causes of dental conditions, designing predictable treatment plans, and managing complex rehabilitation cases with confidence. Small classes, long hours, and world-class teaching create an environment where dentists learn at the highest level.
Training at the Kois Center reshaped every part of Dr. Wong’s practice. Today, our Barrie clinic runs on Kois principles: thorough assessment, risk-based planning, and clarity in communication.

Dr. Wong is now a mentor at the Kois Center, helping other dentists grow while continuing to refine his own expertise.
What can new patients expect when visiting Dr. Elston Wong Dentistry?
New patients usually notice one thing right away: nothing feels rushed.
From the beginning, the team listens carefully to concerns, clarifies long-term goals, and examines the entire mouth, not just the most obvious problem. Dr. Wong believes that thoughtful, unhurried care leads to better outcomes and fewer surprises down the road.
Treatment plans are tailored, practical, and built around long-term success, with home-care guidance woven in. Hygienists also have the time they need to work thoroughly, which patients appreciate more than they expect.
How does Dr. Wong help patients feel comfortable during their dental visits?
Comfort isn’t just about blankets, headphones, or sedation options, though those are available.
From Dr. Wong’s experience, most anxiety comes from not knowing what’s about to happen. So he explains each step clearly, what it means, and why it matters. That simple clarity goes further than anything else when it comes to easing nerves.
Patients often say they felt more relaxed than they expected simply because they understood what was happening.
What does a “whole-mouth approach” mean in Dr. Wong’s practice?
Most people focus only on their teeth, but oral health involves much more. Dr. Wong evaluates six key areas:
- Gum and bone health
- Tooth structure and cavity risk
- Jaw joints and muscles
- Aesthetics and smile confidence
- Airway health
- Oral tissues and cancer screening
He also looks at risk factors, not just current symptoms. In our Barrie clinic, it’s not unusual to see someone with a lifelong history of cavities suddenly go years without any, simply because the underlying risks were finally identified and addressed.
What does Dr. Wong enjoy most about serving the Barrie community?
Barrie has changed a great deal since 2002, but it remains a place where families can settle, grow, and feel connected. Dr. Wong appreciates being able to care for patients over many years, sometimes from childhood into adulthood.
That long-term continuity is what allows him to plan proactively and notice subtle changes that might be missed in a less consistent setting.
What advice does Dr. Wong give patients for maintaining long-term oral health?
His advice is both simple and refreshingly affordable:
- Brush properly
- Floss daily
- Maintain balanced dietary habits
- Use rinses when recommended
- Address issues early instead of waiting
He often reminds patients that prevention is not just the best dentistry, it’s the most cost-effective.

What does Dr. Wong want new patients to know before their first visit?
He hopes new patients walk in believing that a healthier mouth is genuinely achievable.

Dr. Wong often encourages people to come in with an open mind and let go of assumptions about what dental care “should” feel like. When patients allow themselves to experience dentistry differently, the results often exceed their expectations.
